shades of purple (2011)
It is common in both my art and my music that I seek to create an atmosphere. Recently I have been attempting to combine the two, and the mortar between them has been language -- more precisely, my interpretation of language. Musically, I am trying to transform my perception of a word into a musical phrase. Visually, I am transposing the music into film in colorful, overlapping images.
The score may serve as a visual guide for the audience, but there is a chance that they will not link it to the music or the music to an actual linguistic description. The "words" cease to be recognizable; they string together in a long strand of sound -- much like a foreign language when heard by a non-native speaker. In this way, the audience will see the score as not a score, but a long string of photographic impressions.
